Daily PlanIt Emotions-Understanding
Emotions
Thoughts Cause Feelings
Albert Ellis shows that our
interpretations
of events determine our feelings:
Event Thought Feeling
Example: You see someone
sitting at a table crying. You think they must be sad, and feel concern
and sympathy.
Then you look down at the
table
and see the person is cutting an onion. You think the onion is causing
them to cry, and feel relief that nothing is wrong.
Postpone reactions until thoughtful decisions
about
how to act and what to say have been made. Examine perceptions for
possible
inaccuracies. Emotions may be hidden under other emotions. Take the
time
to identify what the feeling truly is. Decide if the issue is important
to you and if your feelings are appropriate. Consider the impact of
what
you plan to say or do.
