Wouldn't it be helpful if we all had barometers on our foreheads indicating our moods to others?

Empathy, the ability to know and understand what others are feeling, is an important component of communication and people skills. Develop empathy by being aware, observing body language and facial expressions. Select one person you know to practice empathy skills.
Find out about:

  •     What is going on in their work
  •     What is going on in their personal life
  •     What is important to them
  •     What they most value
  •     What their goals, hopes and dreams are
  •     What motivates them
  •     How they handle obstacles
Use Reflective Listening to send a message of concern for the feelings of others and desire to know more. Communicate your interpretation of the underlying feelings beneath a message shared with you. Whether accurate or not, the speaker will most likely let you know. 1
